Educational Objectives

The Educational Objective of Southwest Health Career Institute�s Medical Billing and Coding Program is to provide quality Medical Billing and Coding instruction that will enable graduates of the program to obtain entry-level employment as a medical billing and coding specialist in medical offices, medical clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare and insurance facilities.

 

Professional Duties  

A Medical Biller/Coder performs a variety of business functions such as Medicare/Medicaid billing, insurance billing, patients� self-pay billing, accounting and collections. A Medical Biller may also be referred to in the field as an Insurance Billing Specialist, Reimbursement Specialist, or Patient Accounts Representative.

The primary duties of a Medical Coder are to transform information from medical records documentation into numeric codes for optimal reimbursement. The Medical Biller is responsible for finalizing and establishing all CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), UB92 (Universal Billing 1992) insurance claim forms for reimbursement. While an individual may be trained as only a Biller or a Coder, it is far more advantageous to be trained in the combined areas, thus acquiring the certificate of Medical Biller/Coder. Both the Coder and the Biller must have an extensive knowledge of all regulations under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. The trained Biller/Coder must comply with ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Disease, 9th Revision�Classification Modification), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) coding guidelines and must have knowledge of as well as third-party payer requirements for proper reimbursement.

Professional settings that offer career opportunities to the Medical Biller/Coder include: hospitals, outpatient clinics, physicians� offices, medical laboratories, insurance companies, skilled nursing facilities, home health care agencies, and independent coding agencies.
